Casa dos Vimes
The Casa dos Vimes reflects the traditional Azorean architecture, being built on masonry blocks of basalt, which combine in perfect harmony with other elements of wood. They are located in the enchanting Fajã dos Vimes, one of the spaces classified as a biosphere reserve, with a genuine balance between man and nature.
It has the configuration of a slight plan that extends from the foot of the mountains, that is to be found with the limpid waters of the Canal de São Jorge, marked by the Islands of Pico and Faial. The beauty that we contemplate when looking at this sea surrounded by Islands, can not abstract us from other beautiful polychromatic panoramas of Fajã dos Vimes, with the predominance of beautiful shades of green. Here we can appreciate traditional cultivation and methods of cultivation, standing out orchards, vineyards, sowing lands and irrigation of Yams. In this place, the most referenced crops are coffee cultivation (product of exceptional flavor) and yam. This last plant (rhizome) was so fundamental for the survival of the Jorgenses that it involved them in a fight of social character, known as "Mutiny of the Yams" (in the heraldic of the County of Calheta stand out two leaves of this plant).
